End the Job Search: Use This Tip to Find the Right Career Path

Last week, I talked with Katie Couric for a segment called Jobless in America on katiecouric.com. This clip highlights my mantra: Stop looking for job and start looking for a person. The right person will lead you to the right job.

Over 80% of All Jobs Are in the Hidden Job Market

In order to tap into them, you’ve got to get out there and start talking to people. Hone your elevator pitch and let people know who you are, what you can do for them, and what you’re looking for.

Break Down Your Overwhelming Job Transition Into Bite-Sized Tasks

Use what I call “The Rule of Three.” Vow to reach out by phone or e-mail to three people per day to jumpstart your job search. Ask each person for another lead to a job or informational interview. If you did this every day for a year, you’d speak with almost 1,000 people—even if you took the weekends off! Though this is obviously more than you need, you should be able to handle three contacts per day: one in the morning, one at lunch, one in the evening.

So, start today. Make a list of the people you can reach out to easily. Begin with family and friends who will be most receptive and let the circle widen from there.

You’re on your way!
